Rajasthan High Court has reportedly sought a clear stand from CBDT on whether the Tax Audit due date will be extended. No extension relief has been granted so far, while the matter is reported to be listed again on September 29 for final instructions from CBDT.
The Rajasthan High Court on Monday took up the petition filed by the Rajasthan Tax Consultants Association (RTCA) seeking extension of the Tax Audit Report filing deadline for Assessment Year 2026-27 from 30 September 2026 to 31 October 2026. The petition is registered as CW/54522/2026 against the Union of India and the Central Board of Direct Taxes.
According to hearing updates being circulated by persons following the proceedings, the High Court did not grant any immediate extension of the Tax Audit due date during today's hearing.
The Court is reported to have sought a clear stand from CBDT on whether the Tax Audit deadline is proposed to be extended, observing that uncertainty over such an important compliance matter should not continue until the last date.
It is further being reported that the Court raised questions regarding the locus of the Rajasthan Tax Consultants Association in seeking relief specifically concerning Tax Audit work. During the hearing, reference was reportedly made to the fact that statutory Tax Audits are primarily conducted by Chartered Accountants, and the Court is stated to have questioned the absence of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) from the proceedings.
According to the circulating hearing account, the Court also remarked that where Chartered Accountants are facing genuine difficulties in completing Tax Audits, the professional institute representing them would be expected to take appropriate steps.
These remarks, however, should presently be described as reported oral observations, as the detailed order recording today's proceedings has not yet surfaced in the Rajasthan High Court's publicly searchable records that I could verify.
The matter is also reported to have been posted for 29 September 2026 for final instructions from CBDT. Once the official order or updated cause-list/case-status confirms this date, that point can be stated categorically.
