SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey has clarified that the Securities and Exchange Board of India is not currently examining any proposal to permit the National Stock Exchange (NSE) to list or trade its own shares on its platform.
The clarification comes after NSE CEO Ashish Kumar Chauhan recently indicated that the possibility of self-trading in NSE shares could be explored in the future. Chauhan had referred to potential conflict-of-interest considerations while noting that the concept could be revisited as the market ecosystem develops.
Pandey stated that no SEBI committee or panel is presently considering the proposal. He indicated that any future developments regarding self-listing or self-trading would be communicated when formally taken up.
The issue has gained attention following the NSE's market debut on BSE and discussions around the regulatory framework applicable to stock exchanges trading their own securities. CASansaar
