More than 6.5 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have already been filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2026–27, according to an update shared by the Income Tax Department. As of August 20, 2026, more than 2 crore ITRs under Forms 3 and 4 had also been filed.
The Income Tax Department has advised taxpayers to avoid last-minute filing and complete their returns well before the applicable deadline. Taxpayers required to file ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5, ITR-7 and other applicable non-audit returns have been urged to complete the filing process by August 31, 2026.
The department's advisory highlights the importance of timely compliance to avoid a rush closer to the deadline. Taxpayers can access the Income Tax e-filing portal for return filing and related services. CASansaar
